What Is The Ideal Camera For Doc Shooting?

Roland Denning offers his take on the ideal camera for documentary film production.

Ideal?

I am a fan of DSLR video production, but that form factor has limitations. Often not the best choice for "run and gun" shooting, and narrow depth of field is a nice option but today it's an approach that can be overused and deployed without much forethought.

CMOS vs CCD

Here's the link to a new article published in Videomaker magazine. Understanding the differences between popular digital imaging technologies can help you make better choices when you buy a camera.

While camcorders have typically incorporated CCD's since the demise of tube cameras decades ago, the adoption of CMOS chips in camcorders is on the rise due to cheaper manufacturing costs and lower power consumption.

However, CCD's and CMOS video cameras don't always create similar results. To illustrate the differences, here's a YouTube video produced by formaset, and shot from a moving motorcycle.

As you can see, for those shooting conditions a CMOS camera is a lousy choice.
